It’s far too early into Doug Marrone’s coaching tenure to know if the Buffalo Bills picked the right man for the job, but I like that Marrone is not afraid to make roster moves.

On Tuesday, Marrone decided he had seen enough from Colin Brown, and the Buffalo Bills officially announced the release of their left guard who started their first five games of the season.

Buffalo signed Colin Brown off of the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad in 2010. In February, the Bills re-signed Brown to a two-year contract worth $1.445 million. Brown competed with Doug Legursky leading up to the season for the starting left guard job, but after Legursky suffered an injury in a preseason game versus the Detroit Lions, the left guard job was handed to Brown.

Unfortunately for Brown, he was in well over his head. Brown played in all six of Buffalo’s games this season, starting five of them, to poor results. Pro Football Focus (subscription required) rated Brown as the NFL’s worst offensive guard through six weeks with a -30.1 overall rating. Brown was credited with giving up three quarterback sacks, six quarterback hits and 17 quarterback hurries.

The last straw for Brown came against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, a game in which he came off the bench and only played 12 snaps. During his limited time on the field, he gave up a sack and another quarterback hurry. Legursky, who started the game, quickly replaced Brown and never came out of the game again.

Mark Asper Promoted to the 53-Man Roster

Offensive lineman Mark Asper, a sixth-round draft pick of the Bills in 2012, was promoted to the main roster from the practice squad to fill the roster spot opened by Brown’s release.

This is actually Asper’s second stint with the team, but his first time on the 53-man roster in the regular season, as the Bills originally cut Asper following the 2012 preseason. After spending time with the Vikings and Jaguars, Asper had been signed to the Bills practice squad since September 1st.

More Roster Moves

  • The Bills also announced the release of defensive end Jamie Blatnick from their practice squad on Tuesday in a slew of moves. Blatnick impressed the Bills’ coaching staff during OTAs and training camp as an edge rusher, but he didn’t do enough to get a spot on the 53-man roster, and apparently, no longer enough to hold his spot on the practice roster.
  • Buffalo filled Asper and Blatnick’s practice squad vacancies with offensive lineman Bryant Browning and linebacker Jacquies Smith. Browning spent time this season on the New York Giants’ practice squad, while Smith’s last NFL stint was with the New York Jets’ practice squad in 2012.
